Window Restoration
Makes Your Windows Like New
Do you have an old house with those decrepit old sash type windows? You know the kind I’m talking about.
The kind that needs a
window restoration The kind with two pieces that have multiple panes of glass (usually four apiece) with the top part being fixed and then the bottom part that takes all the strength in the world to open because it is constantly stuck, then when you finally do get it to open, it never stays open and only slams shut after you walk away. The kind with the thick wood frames with the caked on house paint, thick from decades and decades of layered coats; possibly rotting from the inside out because of the colony of termites that resides within them. You probably want to get rid of them and install some fancy-schmancy “energy efficient” windows from Sears or something. Don’t do it –
Window Restoration & Repair can work wonders with these classic windows and make them like new again for much less than the cost of replacing the entire lot of them.
These windows used to be beautiful compliments to the overall architecture of the entire house. They were designed with matching trim and sashes, and were built of old growth lumber hewn from virgin forests; crafted to last decades. In some cases, they have lasted at least a century or more. A
window restoration
will make these lovely old windows lovely once again.
Some people insist that brand new replacement windows is the sole way to go. The old windows you have now may not be at their best at the moment, but they were built to last multiple lifetimes and probably already have. A simple window restoration will absolutely make sure of this fact – and make sure they will last multiple lifetimes to come as well. Newer windows, on the other hand, were not manufactured with this design principle whatsoever. In fact, they were designed with planned obsolescence in mind, and will require replacement eventually. Replacement windows are made with cheap plastic that will eventually wear out. The springs they use in the opening and closing of replacement windows will lose their springy-ness. The strings they use to keep a window suspended will break. And the double paned glass that is so energy efficient? It will eventually fail and end up getting cloudy. What’s the use of a window if you can’t see through it?
The
procedure begins by completely disassembling the window. If it
was all tight from the years of painting and repainting, they will sand and plane the thing till it is smooth and svelte. Even if the sashes are in poor condition due to dry rot or termites,
they have the capabilities to create a matching replacement. Whatever it is that
it utilizes to stay open, whether it be a chain, rope, or balancer,
it is completely replaced. If the sashes are loose or deteriorated, they are repaired and restored with caulking or epoxy. They are
re-weighted to ensure that a sash can suspend properly without floating or falling and parting beads, which are most likely not in an ideal condition, are replaced. Squeaky chains and pulleys are well oiled to ensure smooth and quiet operation. Locks are cleaned up and realigned to function properly. The vertical strips of wooden
stops are realigned to assure that the sashes stay in place. Then last but not least, weatherstripping is applied to make the operation
and the energy efficiency of it just as good as a newer model. |
